Surf Scoter AKA Skunk-Head Coot
Surf Scoters are large sea ducks that breed in Alaska and Canada. During the winter they can be found in the surf in Southern California (among other places). This Scoter was photographed just off of the beach in San Diego. They have been nicknamed Skink-head coots...I can see why! They were sure fun to watch darting in and out and under the waves.
