The near threatened (extinct in Uruguay) maned wolf is a large canine of South America. The maned wolf, known locally as Lobo Guará, is found in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay. Genetic studies show that it is neither fox nor wolf, but a distinct species. It is the only member of its genus, Chrysocyon.
